When we moved the hens to their new run in the field, the egg numbers dropped for a couple of days. One day there was 8, the next 5! I put it down to stress after the move after ruling out someone/something poaching the eggs.
Well, tonight I think I found the thief…. a grey squirrel. When I went into the hen house to collect the days eggs, I first noticed a few feathers on the house floor. This is not particularly unusual, but the dead grey squirrel in the corner certainly was.
It had been a clean kill – no blood, eyes open. Four of the hens are beginning to go broody, so my guess is that they were having none of Mr Squirrel’s thieving and gave him a good seeing too!
